Talekulu – Zimbabwe

Talekulu Africa Zimbabwe Running around game No props N.o.p.> Hopping on one leg with your arms crossed is for many children not so difficult, but when you have to knock down your opponent who wants to do the same with you, then it’s another story. Most children have lots of fun doing so.

All children form groups of three. These three children form a circle, in which another child sits on his heels. Apart from all these groups there are two children, one is the ‘hunter’ and the other is the ‘rabbit’. The hunter must try to catch the rabbit. The rabbit has an escape by going into the little groups of three children, and the child who was sitting on his knees in that particular circle must get out and becomes automatically the hunter. The child who was the hunter will now be the rabbit and he tries to escape from the new hunter by also getting quickly into a group of three.

These deaf boys play this game more often. The boy with the tree branch in the middle gives a visual sign to all players to begin to walk: he turns the tree branch above his head until suddenly he brings it down. Then he walks towards the boys who all are standing in a “freeze” position. They may not move at all, not even with your eyelids and also smiling is forbidden. When you do and noted, you’re out!

The playground is divided into three parts. Two groups of four children play this game. One group has to tag the other but is not allowed to tag the children of the other group without losing hold of the lines on which they are standing: they must always hold their feet/arm/leg on a line. The other group has to try to reach the other side of the playground without being tagged. If you are tagged, you have to leave the playground. If not you go back to your starting position.

This most friendly game needs always one player more than there are trees. Make fast run between the trees: who will first arriving at the tree? Good game, because everybody will get as many chances as there are children making mistakes in the game.
